The Story of globeVSmap
Interactive Globe and Mapstarted as a brilliant open-source 3D globe script created by science communicatorRalph Crewe.
It was later picked up, heavily modified, and expanded into a full teaching tool byPatrick Schunck (psch.dk). What started as a simple idea to add a slider for Great Circle angles quickly evolved into a deep dive into spherical mathematics.
Today, the project features real-time Rhumb line (Loxodrome) calculations, a D3.js engine to perfectly wrap complex routes across the International Date Line, URL scenario sharing, and interactive projection tools.
It was built specifically to help geography and science teachers easily explain the mind-bending differences between a true 3D globe and the distorted 2D Mercator projection.
